Every year on June 15th, communities around the world join to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). Since its inception 16 years ago, WEAAD has provided an opportunity to promote awareness of—and critical actions from all over the world that addresses—abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older people.
ACL is excited to once again be a part of the countdown to WEAAD!
Awareness events and activities help build relationships, strengthen partnerships, and bring recognition to the increasing number of effective local and regional efforts to address elder abuse.
To help you observe WEAAD 2022 in your community, ACL’s National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) has created a WEAAD toolkit which includes fact sheets, sample articles and proclamations, graphics, sample social media content, and more tips and tools. Additionally, agencies and community organizations can request free WEAAD bookmarks (available in English and Spanish) and campaign day stickers from NCEA.
On June 15th, ACL and federal partners including the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Social Security Administration, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will come together for a joint WEAAD webinar to share strategies for advancing elder justice. We invite you to join your federal partners and to spread the word among your friends and colleagues. Stay tuned for more information about the webinar.
